Homes that utilize a great amount of natural light not only come across as cleaner and more refined, but their spaces seem larger than they are and the need for artificial light is eliminated which is more eco-friendly. You don’t have to have floor-to-ceiling windows and a modern, open floor plan to incorporate more natural light into your home’s feng shui, though.

A big misconception for prospective home buyers is that natural light is a rigid element of a home’s architecture; there is no way to adjust this without months of burdensome and expensive construction and redesigning. Sometimes, all a room needs is a fresh coat of paint! White and light colors reflect light, making a room seem brighter. Some designers even suggest white flooring for the illusion of even more light and space. Although this may not be for everybody, sticking with a light paint color with white decor or a white rug can really lighten a room.

Decor also plays a large part in the perceived amount of sunlight that shines through. Many decorators recommend moving away the clutter around your window frame. Not only will this prevent shadows across your room, but also give the illusion of a bigger, more open space. Mirrors are another important design element that reflect light and create a brighter space. One trick is to put equal sized mirrors across from one another to develop a sense of depth which can make dark rooms seem brighter and bigger. Similarly, placing a mirror close to a window of similar size will not only give the window a greater appearance, but utilize as much natural light as possible in your space.

Don’t think your tiny, dark space doesn’t have potential! Any room can seem big and bright as long as you have a positive vision and know a few tips and tricks.
